MAJ Ken Maykowski ’90

MAJ Ken Maykowski was commissioned in 1970 and joined active duty first serving as a tank platoon leader and then as a Combat Support Company Commander. In 1974, he joined the Ohio Army National Guard where he held a variety of roles until transitioning to the US Army Reserve Command in St. Louis from 1985-1987. For the balance of his career, starting in 1987, he served in the 123d Reserve Command out of Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1991-1992, he commanded a finance company while deployed to Saudi Arabia. MAJ Maykowski retired in 1993.

In 1987, Ken Maykowski joined the AROTC Alumni Society, one year after the Society’s formation, and maintains the longest continuous service of anyone on the Society’s board of directors – 35 years.

He has served proficiently and faithfully as treasurer for 29 years, only interrupted by one year of civilian service in Iraq. In his many years of service to the Society, Ken has contributed both ‘institutional memory’ and a forward vision. Ken’s expertise and experience as a certified public accountant would often become evident as he would “reiterate” the financial (solvency) position when required during board discussions. In addition to his constant oversight of funds and timely paying of bills—and in some years handling over 200 checks—Ken routinely completed all forms and financial reports required by the OSU Alumni Association and the IRS (990-N).

For over 30 years, Ken has generously sponsored cadets’ attendance at Hall of Fame dinners, Senior Breakfast, Military Ball, and alumni tailgates to various athletic events (football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s hockey, and wrestling). In 2016 Ken received the OSU Alumni Societies Leadership Award for his service as treasurer and other support to the Society. Ken is married to Sharon and has one son, three daughters, 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
